Using your FTP/Dante account to backup your data
All students have access to 300MB of secure personal storage for email, a website, and general files provided by UW Computing and Communications. You may access this using a secure FTP program to transfer files across the network to this storage space from lab workstations. Your 300MB is shared with your email and website so be sure you are not transferring too much there because if you fill it up or exceed your space allowance, you could stop receiving email! Check MyUW for information about how much space you have.
To transfer files from a lab workstation to your Dante FTP account:
BEFORE BACKING UP GIS PROJECTS AND DATA, BE SURE THAT YOU HAVE SET YOUR MAP DOCUMENT TO STORE RELATIVE PATHS SO IT WILL OPEN CORRECTLY ON ANOTHER GIS WORKSTATION.
- Go to Start>Programs>UWICK Applications>SSH Secure FTP>Secure FTP:
- You should get a screen similar to this one:
- Press Enter or the Space Bar to initiate a the "Connect to Remote Host" dialog box and fill it in as follows, then click connect:
- Enter your UWNetID password:
- You should then have a window quite similar to this one:
- In the middle left pane, you see the familiar My Documents and My Computer icons. By navigating in this pane, you can find your project folder and drag it to the right-hand pane to upload it to the server. Before you upload your folder to Dante make sure that you have enough space there. You can download it back to your computer by dragging a folder the other way. Anywhere you have this software installed along with an internet connection you can access your Dante account in this manner.
